The Boston Society of Architects Design Excellence in Housing Award

Since 2009, Roy MacDowell has served as a partner and the principal of Baystone Development, a company that invests in and develops real estate. In this role, Roy MacDowell is responsible for helping the award-winning firm determine its strategic direction.

In 2000, Baystone Development received the Design Excellence in Housing Award from the Boston Society of Architects (BSA) in recognition of its work at Cronin’s Landing in Waltham, Massachusetts. Operated in conjunction with the American Institute of Architects, New York (AIANY) Housing Committee, which explores design and technology issues as they relate to housing developments, the BSA Housing Design Awards recognize projects that achieve excellence in functional, aesthetic, sustainable, social, or contextual design.

Any architect or firm that currently operates in New York City or New England may submit entries of any housing type. Architects and firms based elsewhere may submit projects if those projects are in New York City or New England.

About Roy MacDowell

Roy MacDowell, a principal in the Weston, Massachusetts, real estate development and management firm Baystone Development, additionally served as the president of The MacDowell Company, a landscape design and construction firm he founded more than 40 years ago. At Baystone, he oversees strategic planning and implements the company’s vision, evaluating new projects and guiding them through to realization. In this capacity, Roy MacDowell brings his decades’ worth of experience in management and design to further the goals of the award-winning firm.

Roy MacDowell has maintained a strong commitment to community involvement and has served on the boards of numerous Massachusetts educational and charitable organizations. His posts include service as a trustee of his alma mater Babson College. In 2007, the college named a playing field after him and his family.

In 1998, The Rivers School of Weston named its new library after Roy MacDowell and his family. He and his wife had played a key role in the construction of the library, serving as co-chairs of the capital campaign steering committee and contributing the first donation to the fundraising effort. The school has also named its athletic center and arena after the family. Mr. MacDowell served as board president of the school from 2004 to 2012. On his retirement from the board, administrators noted in particular his ability to get a job done successfully from idea to completion.
